Welcome
to ClareCon!
As
we speak, Clare has taken time out of her recurring position
of MC and host of the Starfury Angel event, Quor'toth and
her appearance at these events has become an integral part
of the weekend's success. Since her first appearance at
Bad Girls in November 2001, Clare embraces her connection
with the fans wholeheartedly and has invoked such affection
that the convention scene would definitely not seem the
same without her. So what is it that keeps bringing her
back time and time again? "The thing about the UK convention
is it's like going to summer camp," she raves, "it's
like you've been away, you haven't talked to these people,
you haven't seen them then you come and you have so much
to share and as an actor it's really nice to hear feedback
and it's nice to give people answers to questions they may
ask. For me, I have found a bigger social scene here you
know where I just really enjoy the girls that are the guest
liaisons and I'm good friends with Sean [Harry]. I enjoy
just coming here and that's the bottom line and I feel like
'I'm going to camp and I think yay I get to see my friends."
Clare has not only attended numerous events in the UK but
many around the world and a lot of them have been with a
number of familiar faces. I asked Clare if she had made
friends with other cast members as a result of the con scene?
"Yes Julie Benz (Darla), Elizabeth Anne Allen (Amy)
and it turns out I've known Sarah [Thompson] (Eve) for like
eleven years and it just so happens she got on Angel, I
was on Buffy and now we're together here," she says,
"and then there's Andy Hallett, I love Andy! There
are people you know even though you're on set with them
you don’t get to know them really in a social kind
of way because you're working but now these are like my
social friends and it's true that at my birthday party last
year there were a ton of Buffy people and some were saying
wow what a tight cast but really it has nothing to do with
that, it's more that we've all got together for other reasons.”
With
her status as convention veteran firmly established, if
Clare had the chance to organise and run her own convention
– ClareCon – what would she do? “I'd do
The X Files Con,” Clare responds without hesitation,
“Oh my God, I love David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
I love that show and when I was in New York, I watched it
religiously but when I moved to California I had no TV for
like the first year so I didn't get to watch it but that
would be my con. So guest wise, I'd have David and Gillian
and Cancer Man. There is something about that show and I
haven't really found a replacement for it, like I've tried
to watch different shows but the chemistry between them
two was so good.”
